The star has given the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the UK's independent concert spaces.

He was presented with the cheque on October 16 as his third album his work was named the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

Fender has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the crucial part small stages had in his beginning days.

"I personally wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the performances I performed around the region, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have ceased operations – roughly one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, major artists including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

Sam Fender also took part, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help numerous local spots across the UK.

The donation helped venues that were facing possible closure due to difficulties arising from flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces received funding support in upgrading infrastructure and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The concept that funds from performances in big venues backs the independent spots, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," the star has said.

The musician is far from the only musician to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to good deeds.

Back when they won the trophy in 1996 for their album their work, frontman Jarvis Cocker declared that the group would give their prize money to the organization the charity.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her award between a few charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed new equipment," the artist told outlets.

Previously, they gave their prize money to the community center that nurtured their act, alongside other local music groups.

Additionally 1994 winners they contributed their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the disease.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," remarked vocalist the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our victory touched another person's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had rescued several small stages in that region, by bringing them into local control.

The first in the city and the other in that location were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by the arts council and music fans who buy "shares" in the buildings.
